From wool to faux fur, this season's best outerwear comes in a variety of shapes, colours, and price points. Warm up on a cold day with fall's best women's jackets.

When shopping for a winter topper this season, the beauty is in the details. Coats are dramatic, embellished, and surprisingly affordable. Just because the weather is dreary doesn’t mean your outerwear has to be too.

Dramatic Collars

Add instant drama to your outerwear by looking for a winter coat with an embellished or oversized collar. Some of the best examples of dramatic collars are found on otherwise simple jackets. Take a basic trench, but add ruffles to the collar, and you have instant style. French Connection is one store that offers beautiful and relatively affordable coats, with fur-lined collars, oversized collars, and military detailing.

Rainbow Brights

Inject some colour into a grey day, and boost your mood with a brightly coloured winter coat. Typically winter coats are made in the standard black, grey, navy spectrum. But this season, the brighter the colour the better, and coats are on display in scarlet red, canary yellow, and electric blue. To balance the brightness of your outerwear, opt for neutral boots and handbag.

Under $200

Generally, shopping for a winter jacket can be pricey, especially when you live in a climate that requires your coat keeps you warm in addition to keeping you stylish. The good news is that the proliferation of affordable yet fashion-forward chains, like GAP, H&M, and Topshop, means that you can find the coat of your dreams while staying within budget.

Another tip for finding a great jacket under $200 is to hit up the vintage and consignment shops in your area. Vintage shopping takes a bit more time and dedication, but you can find some amazing treasures and incredible deals.

Unexpected Details

This season some of the best coats are fairly minimalist, but have unexpected details that take them from ordinary to extraordinary. For instance, look for a classic wool trench with an intricate pattern for a lining or under the collar. A small change in the way a jacket is tailored adds subtle elegance, such as a wool topper that has balloon tailoring, or a military style cape or poncho.

With all of the beautifully detailed and tailored women’s jackets available this season, there are endless options for a coat that will make the cold weather a little more enjoyable.
